50 years later....

In 50 years, I will be 73 years old. Although the future is uncertain I can only hope that my journey through life is pleasent, or at least have the good out weigh the bad.
At 73 I'll have a family; a husband maybe a kid or two. I will have buried both my parents. My children will have their own lives. At 73 I hope to be retired from whatever career I've had. I will still be making art (I promise). At 73 I will probably thinking back about how I've lived my life and think how stupid I was for worrying about things or making stupid decisions. I hope to be calmer, and have more compassion for those around me. At 73 my tattoos will be as wrinkled as my face. At 73 I will probably be a grandmother. I will probably have to be checked for colon cancer and breast cancer a lot, since it runs in both sides of my family. I hope to only be married once. At 73 I'll be able to go and come as I please, travel far distances, and see the world. I will probably cherish life much more as I come nearer to the end of it. I might have buried my only brother he'll be 78. We will be old farts together. At 73 I can only hope that I will be strong enough to live my life to the fullest. I will be fearless in the presents of death. At 73 maybe I'll look like my mom or my grandmother or maybe neither one. At 73 maybe my boobs will be perky since I hope to get a boob job before I'm 40. By 73 maybe i'll have finally written and illustrated several childrens books. By 73 I hope to be well known in my community for doing something great. I don't want to be your average 73 year old.

Part I

Color can simply be defined as divided light wave lengths. Color comes from the spectrum of light. Primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. Secondary colors are green (blue+ yellow), purple (blue + red), and orange (red + yellow). The tertiary colors are blue violet, blue green, yellow green, yellow orange, red violet and red orange. Black and White usually aren’t considered color they are considered tone. Color comes in hue, saturation, and value. When you combine complementary colors you get a neutral grey. Complementary colors are red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple. I have no idea how to make a proper brown. Color is expression and feeling to me. When I see a color I feel it, it makes me feel a certain way. I have always associated color with feelings.
Part II

My favorite color is red. I like deep reds. I’m not sure why I like deep reds so much the color just attracts my eyes. My first favorite color choice came when I was in Kindergarten. I loved hot pink that’s when Crayola had those neon color crayons. I think I liked that color so much because it was so bright and it reminded me of my Barbies.
Part III

Part IV

The work of an artist and a curator relate in the way that they both must think of the best way to express the subject of the art work. Some similarities are that they both must envision a cohesive idea to express; they both must arrange the subjects in a unique way while still maintaining some collective unconscious so the view can relate to the piece. Both must be innovative in their approach to presenting the work of art. They are both critique artwork to a certain degree. Some differences are obviously the artist creates the art while the curator displays the art. Curators group art using some sort of system of organization while an artist has no rules there is no need for a system of organization to produce art. When curatorial practices and art practices combine the artist obviously has some idea of piecing together pieces of their own art in order to achieve their set goal for those art pieces. Curatorial practices among artists seem to happen when a new movement of art is happening for example contemporary art. Artists usually curate contemporary art galleries because they understand what and where their piece will be beneficial; how to put it together and how to better express their idea behind their piece. Artists as well as curators know how to arrange art work so that is well lit and properly displayed. Fred Wilsons reshuffling of Maryland Historical Society’s collection and highlighting the history of Native and African American’s in Maryland. His artistic approach of examining, questioning, and deconstructing the traditional display of art and artifacts in museums were innovative. He had an objective to question the limitations of cultural institutions and how they interpret artistic value and history. There is an art to being able to curate, it takes imagination.

Julie- 80's to the maxxx

We raided the closet, and this is the result. Ultimate 80's meets Harajuku..enjoy :D

Console

In my print “Console,” I used a variety of symbolism to amplify the concept of being overweight and how that impacts both society’s view of an individual and causes insecurities. The use of color in this print is meant to convey anger along with a shroud of calmness as the large beauties slip away to a place that is more accepting. I used tribal-like marks as a border to symbolize how many tribal civilizations interpreted large women as being symbols of fertility and prosperity. The eyes are symbolic of how society perceives larger woman, eating them with their eyes, criticizing every inch of their body. The mouth is both symbolic of verbal abuse and the abuse of food. The central glowing figures are large women consoling each other. The large women are spilling out over their intended confinement of staring eyes and whispers to regain their place as symbols of fertility and prosperity.

If I were any food what would I be and Why?

If I were any food I think I’d classify myself as an Atomic Fireball. I have many things in common with an Atomic Fireball. I am comprised of several layers; I like the color red, and metaphorically I am wrapped in plastic. I consider myself an Atomic fireball because of the gradual build up of intense heat caused by this confection. Once you pop an Atomic Fireball in your mouth the sensation is a mild cinnamon, the longer the atomic fireball is in your mouth the level of heat intensifies. Almost to the point where it is intolerable but then comes the soothing relief of sugar that heals the mouth and washes away the heat. That in itself is a metaphor for practically everything that is occurring in my life. I can apply that to my school life, my personal life, and my work life. I get overwhelmed easily but eventually it subsides.

Vices

In my print “Vices,” I incorporated the idea of dream imagery with hypnagogic imagery. The piece defines my perspective on life. The overall design is to symbolize the deterioration of time when presented with large amounts of knowledge. Shadowed hands present an overwhelming amount of knowledge that encompasses both solitude and time. The three raven are symbolic of my personal three vices; desire (as into covet), revenge, and lust. These symbolic ravens are meant to impede the scheme of knowledge and time. These vices stop the creative process for me, as they stop the light of knowledge from shining in my piece. I used monochromatic styling for this piece to illustrate the stand still of motivation and creativity that vices can create.

Project #1- Fear

Fearful Expressions

The in class assignment was interesting mainly because I was able to see the creative skills of my class mates. I thought that trying to a single out a main idea for each topic would be time consuming. I thought it might be impossible for all of us to agree on one thought with a limited time table looming over us. So I suggested word association. For example, the first topic was a memory I asked each class mate to give me the first memory that popped into their head. As a result we were able to combine all our memories into one slightly odd sketch. I also learned that it is hard to sketch something out when you have 3 other pairs of hands moving around in your space. We proceeded to do this with all of the other topics. Some came out better than others. I was surprised that for the imaginary portion a lot of the class had drawn fantasy creatures. It was very interesting to see what everyone’s input was and how we were able to combine it. I thought that the assignment challenged our creativity also it helped us to get to know each other better.

Exploitation

As for the last couple of days I have been showing other students my photography in hopes to see which photos would be best to incorporate into my portfolio.
One of my classmates commented that this specific photo was exploitative of the subject. She also added that most photography professors would crucify you if you took pictures of the homeless.
I question is how on earth is this exploitative? I did not sell this photo to anyone.
Defination:
ex·ploit
Pronunciation: \ik-ˈsplȯit, ˈek-ˌ\
Function: transitive verb
1 : to make productive use of : utilize
2 : to make use of meanly or unfairly for one's own advantage
I feel in no way that I am belittling this woman by taking her photo. I merely thought she was an interesting subject. As for the photo, it is a lifestyle photo. It portrayes reality and in no means exploits her.
as for utilizing her, well her photo would be useful in my portfolio.. I'm a little confused by her comment.
I know as a photograph I have the power to make a picture, but I just don't see how this could be seen as an exploitative photo.
[post script]: I gave her 4 euros after I took her picture.

New Design

I designed a new tattoo for my left upper arm. The creature is a cecaelia. I believe they would be the true sirens of the sea. I was inspired by 20,000 leagues under the sea. The fish on balloons are my surreal idea of flying fish. The chain represents her ablity to take down ships and cause chaos. If you notice at the end of the chain she has ripped someone in two. That person represents me. I'm hoping to add more to the background.
now that you know what my new soon to be tattoo is going to be. I would deeply appreciate any donations towards actually getting the tattoo on my arm :x.
thank you :D
